The black bird hovered a foot off the prarie in the steady wind. A coyote followed haltingly, wanting to charge, but conserving strength. The crow taunted and landed just out of reach. Why? It was winter so no nests would have eggs for several months. Practice maybe, but why risk getting eaten for sport.
The wild dog grew bored and wandered randomly toward a dry gulch. Suddenly a rabbit jumped up at the coyotes feet and his jaws instinctively snapped it up. It was a small rabbit, but practically a gift. He thrashed it soundly and carried the limp body to cover in the brush.
The crow and a magpie watched carefully hoping for a scrap later.
